Zoldan horse to make Run for Roses

For the second straight year, Youngstown Phantoms owner Bruce Zoldan will have a horse make a Run for the Roses in Louisville, Ky.

On Saturday, Went the Day Well took first place at the Grade III Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park, in Florence, Ky., to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.

The bay colt is owned by Team Valor. Zoldan, chief executive office of B.J. Alan Fireworks, is a partner in Team Valor.

Last year, Team Valor’s Animal Kingdom came from way behind to win the Kentucky Derby. Two weeks later in Baltimore, Animal Kingdom was second by half a length to Shackleford in the Preakness Stakes, just missing a shot at racing’s Triple Crown.

Three weeks later, Animal Kingdom suffered an injury during a rocky start in the Belmont Stakes, sitting out the rest of 2012.

Went the Day Well took first place in the 12-horse field at the Spiral Stakes. He is trained by Graham Motion, who also trained Animal Kingdom last year.

“He won the race in magnificent form,” Zoldan said. “We are very excited about qualifying for the Kentucky Derby for the second straight year and look forward to another strong showing in the upcoming weeks.”

The Kentucky Derby will be run on May 5 at Churchill Downs and televised by NBC.
