Neighborhood safety programs in Warren

WARREN

The Warren Weed and Seed Program and Warren Police Department are taking applications for Citizens Police Awareness Academy training and the Warren Safety Initiative. Both programs are designed to help residents become effective “eyes and ears” for the city. The safety initiative also covers neighborhood-watch development for anyone interested in starting a neighborhood group.

Applications for both can be picked up at the Warren Police Department, 141 South St., or Warren Weed & Seed, 760 Main St. SW, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The next class for the Citizens Police Awareness Academy begins April 5 and runs for seven consecutive Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The Warren Safety Initiative will meet the third Tuesday of each month through April 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. The first class was Tuesday. High School students age 15 and older are welcome to participate, but a waiver form must be completed by the parent or guardian.

The statewide tornado-siren test will be at 9:50 a.m. next Wednesday, the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency reports.

Veterans program

Veterans and active members of the military, Guard, Reserve and their families can discover how they can start or expand a small business by attending a free seminar on Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Austintown Public Library, 600 S. Raccoon Road. To register, call 330-744-8636.

“Growing Opportunities for Veterans & Aspiring Entrepreneurs” is part of a series of veteran-focused small- business events throughout Northern Ohio. It is presented by the Business and Investment Center of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Topics to be covered include veteran-focused certifications available, federal and state government contracting, and business financing. Representatives of SBA’s Cleveland District Office, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center and the regional Veterans Business Outreach Center will attend.
