1987: Members of the UAW Local 1653 reject a proposed 3-year contract from the new owners of the Greenville Steel Car Co., which once had more than 1,000 employees, but has shrunk to fewer than 650.
Former Mahoning County Prosecutor Vincent Gilmartin formally requests that his successor, Prosecutor Gary Van Brocklin, file a taxpayer lawsuit to block relocation of county welfare offices from downtown to an East Side plaza.
1972: The last local team remaining the state high school basketball tournament is Poland, which defeated LaBrae, 60-58, in the Class AA regional finals to win a trip to Columbus.
1962: The Westminster Titans basketball team, finalists in the NAIA tournament in Kansas City ,are greeted by a crowd of 1,000 as the team returns to the B&O Railroad station in New Castle.
The valuation of all residential property in Mahoning County exceeds $426 million, an increase of more than $51 million due to reappraisal. The total duplicate is $581 million, which includes utilities and personal property.
