Canfield man injured in fatal S.C. crash

CANFIELD

A Canfield man was injured and a Medina man killed when their car veered off the right side of Interstate 77 and struck several trees near Exit 73 on state Route 901 in Rock Hill, S.C., around 11:41 a.m. Friday.

The driver, Vincent A. Donofrio, 20, of Canfield, was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Donofio’s condition was unknown Friday night.

The passenger, Jakob Vondervellen, 19, of Medina, died at the scene of the crash, according to an online story published by the Rock Hill Herald.

Both Donofrio and Vondervellen attended Ohio Wesleyan University.

Man injured in fall

YOUNGSTOWN

A 26-year-old Youngstown man was seriously injured when he fell 20 to 30 feet while rock climbing in Mill Creek Park early Friday evening. Mill Creek MetroParks police said George Stickle of Paisley Street slipped on the wet rock and fell in the early evening at Lanterman’s Mill, an area about 100 yards into the park off Canfield Road (U.S. Route 62).

Stickle, apparently wedged between rocks, was extracted by Youngstown Fire Department personnel and transported by Rural Metro Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he was in guarded condition in the emergency department.

Man is acquitted

YOUNGSTOWN

A Mahoning County Common Pleas Court jury has acquitted a 24-year-old South Meridian Road man of two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Matthew B. Alexander was found innocent of the fourth-degree felony counts Thursday, after a trial over which Judge James C. Evans presided. The alleged offenses occurred Oct. 14, 2010, and the alleged victim was 14 at that time.

Springfield cleanup

NEW SPRINGFIELD

Springfield Township trustees announced the 2012 spring cleanup is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21. Waste Management will be open to township residents for drop-offs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Car and truck tires also may be dropped at the township building that day, where a site will be set up. A nominal fee will be charged for the tire disposal.
