Canfield youth wrestlers compete at state tourney

Youngstown will be the wrestling mecca for the second week in row as wrestlers from all over Ohio come to the Covelli Centre to compete in the Grade School state championships.

More than 1,200 wrestlers, in grades six and under, will compete in four divisions over two days on 10 mats. Among the field will be 13 competitors from the Canfield Wrestling Club.

“This has been a good year for the club. We have a great group of sixth-graders who have worked very hard over the past few years.

This weekend is an opportunity for our kids to show that they are more than just good in the Mahoning Valley — that they are some of the best in the state,” said coach Dave Crawford.

Among the sixth-graders competing this weekend are David Crawford (100 pounds), Andy Garr (80), Will Dawson (95, Daniel Kapalko (110), Dominic Cooper (110) and Taarek Maalouf (140).

Others competing this weekend include Ethan Fletcher (68), Mike Crawford (70), Hunter Helminiak (75), Aiden Burcsak (75), Carter Myers (90), Nick Crawford (90) and Michael O’Horo (100).

Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. today and concludes with the finals tomorrow night. More information, including brackets and results, can be found at www.ohioathletics.com.
