Fourth-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School did not let the pouring down rain dampen their spirits, or fun, at their Field Day June 1. The day is meant as a celebratory send-off to the fourth-graders as they leave Hilltop and enter Canfield Village Middle School.
“What’s better than a day of memories and smiles?” said Cathy Mowry, Hilltop Elementary School principal.
Originally scheduled to be held outside, the field day was relocated to the gym, where the students enjoyed such activities, organized by physical education teacher Linda Magyar, as dribble the ball relay, balance the noodle relay, pass the ball overhead and through the legs relays and the hula hoop chain relay.
“These relays are all designed to highlight teamwork. You must work together with your teammates to make it through the relay,” Magyar told the students.
To end the games portion of the day, Magyar set up a tug-of-war for the students, with the teachers joining in to help pull.
The day was sponsored by the Hilltop PTO, which provided a lunch of hot dogs, chips, cookies and watermelon. Several PTO volunteers were on hand to help with the day.
The students were also shown a video of themselves as they grew from kindergartners to fourth-graders.
As a special treat for their last hurrah, the PTO provided Kona Ice for all the students.
The students created a mural by classes, which hung in the fourth-grade hallway. They could write a message or create a drawing of their choice. Several students traced their hands on the mural and wrote their favorite Hilltop memory.
The highlight of the day, which also brought an end the event, was dancing and singing with the help of D.J. John Lisowski. Much to the delight of the students, Lisowski played several favorites, including the Electric Slide and the Hokey Pokey, and involved the students in a round of limbo.
Lisowski also sang karaoke and asked the students to help him sing. He played several popular songs while the children, teachers, PTO volunteers and even their principal danced the afternoon away.
