GIRARD

The Girard Board of Education approved hiring five teachers for the 2012-13 school year.

The board, at its Wednesday night meeting, approved employment for Anna Scirocco as a high school Italian teacher; Alyssa DiBernardi as a language arts and social studies teacher at the intermediate school; Aaraon Alejars as a math teacher at the junior high school; Rachel Zuzga as an intervention specialist for the intermediate school; and Craig Hannon as an intervention specialist for the high school.

“I’m so happy to be in Girard,” said Hannon, who will also serve as the high school basketball coach. “It’s great to get the one capacity as a basketball coach, but even more important, I get to teach,” he added.

Along with the new teachers, principals from the high school, intermediate, junior high and high school announced the success of their schools’ scores in the Ohio Achievement Assessment tests, and the Ohio Graduation test.

“I just want to publicly congratulate all the principals for their work,” said Superintendent David Cappuzzello.

The OAA measures grades three through eight, while the OGT is designed for grades nine through 12 and is a state requirement before graduation.

The board also learned the district received a $1,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Earlier in the year, seventh-grade students wrote to ODOT and explained why safety and riding bikes were important to them, said Louise Mason, junior high principal. After receiving hundreds of entries from all over the state, ODOT declared Girard the winner, and it received the $1,000 grant.

The junior high school was recognized for its performance in ODOT’s “Every Move You Make, Keep it Safe” safety-writing contest.

“We would love to spend it on bikes for kids,” said Mason, who is still unsure how the school will spend the money.

According to the ODOT congratulatory letter, the funding can be used for tools or equipment that supports education on safe bicycling and walking.
