Visiting Judge Thomas Pokorny of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will render his verdict at 11 a.m. today in the nonjury trial of Ivan Maldonado in the Youngstown State University payroll scandal.

The defense presented its case and closing arguments were Thursday afternoon.

The charges against Maldonado alleged illegal manipulation of tuition remission, a wage garnishment and Ohio Public Employees Retirement System credit.

Maldonado, 44, of Euclid Boulevard, is a former university payroll assistant and former president of the Association of Classified Employees at YSU.

Maldonado was indicted on 10 counts of theft, two counts each of falsification and theft in office and one count each of tampering with records and grand theft.

After the prosecution rested its case Tuesday, Judge Pokorny granted a defense motion to dismiss nine theft counts and one count of theft in office on the grounds that the prosecution’s evidence was insufficient to support them.

In the retirement- benefit manipulation portion of the case, that dismissal wiped out all but a single theft count.
