Romero homers twice, helps Scrappers start 1-0

JAMESTOWN, N.Y.

Juan Romero hit two home runs and drove in four runs as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their season opener, 8-5, over the Jamestown Jammers on Monday at Russell Diethrick Park.

Hunter Jones tripled, singled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Scrappers, who led 3-0 after two innings.

After the Jammers tied the game at 3, both teams scored a run in the fifth and Mahoning Valley added three more in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Evan Frazar added two hits and a run, Jose Ramirez doubled, singled and scored a run and Eric Gonzalez had a triple, an RBI and two runs for the Scrappers.

Geoffrey Davenport started and gave up three runs (all earned) in 32/3 innings for Mahoning Valley, striking out two, walking two and giving up four hits.

Luis Morel gave up an unearned run on two hits in 21/3 innings to get the win, striking out two and walking one. Jack Wagoner added two innings of one-run relief and Enosil Tejeda pitched a scoreless ninth.

Anthony Gomez and Kentrell Dewitt each had two hits for Jamestown. Beau Wright gave up three runs in two innings of relief to get the loss.

The Scrappers finish the two-game series tonight in Jamestown, then return home for two games against the Jammers at Eastwood Field beginning Wednesday.

Wednesday is Military Appreciation Night, with personnel receiving two free box seat tickets. The biggest fireworks show of the season follows.
