Renegades hit Scrappers early to open series
Staff report
FISHKILL, N.Y.
The Hudson Valley Renegades pounced on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for four runs in the first three innings in Saturday’s 6-3 victory in New York Penn League action.
Scrappers starter Geoffrey Davenport (0-2) gave up seven hits in the four-and-two-thirds innings he worked. He walked three and struck out two batters.
Taylor Guerrieri tossed three shutout innings for the Renegades (15-11), then gave way to Brandon Henderson (2-0), who allowed two runs in the three innings he pitched.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Scrappers (13-13) scored twice to climb back into the game. With two outs, Marcus Bradley singled to start a rally. A wild pitch sent him to second base and Brandon Henderson’s double sent him home. Robel Garcia followed with an RBI double.
The Renegades regained control when they scored twice in the seventh inning for a 6-2 lead on Thomas Coyle’s two-run homer.
In the ninth inning, the Scrappers loaded the bases after Bradley and Gonzalez singled and Garcia walked. Jairo Kelly grounded into a double play, scoring Bradley.
The Scrappers play day games here today and Monday before returning to Niles for a Tuesday game.
