Mahoning County jury deliberates fate of 16-year-old charged with murder


YOUNGSTOWN — The fate of a 16-year-old city youth charged with murder is now in the hands of a Mahoning County jury.

Shonqualin Hendrix has been on trial for murder before Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court all week. He is charged with gunning down 17-year-old Braylen Collins of West Glenaven Avenue on the South Side in July 2011.

Robert Andrews, an assistant county prosecutor, and Mark Lavelle, representing Hendrix, offered closing statements to the jury this morning. The jury began deliberating the case this afternoon.
