YOUNGSTOWN

Leo Connelly of Poland was appointed as a board member of the Mahoning County Veterans Commission on Jan. 13.

Connelly, a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 and AMVETS Post 44, is junior vice commander of the United Veterans Council of the Mahoning Valley.

As a commission member, Connelly represents the DAV and is responsible for establishing policies and procedures for the veteran service office, including temporary emergency assistance, claims through the Department of Veterans Affairs, utility assistance, Wade Park VA facility transportation, Ohio veterans bonuses, training, outreach and coordination with other agencies.

Connelly was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor in March 2011.

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Patrolman Richard Baldwin is the Department of Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. He received the award Saturday at the Ohio VFW Mid-Winter Conference in Columbus.

Baldwin was nominated for the award by Barry Landgraver, executive director of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission.

PROMOTIONS

Air Force Maj. David Cathell was promoted to his current rank while serving as an emergency-actions officer assigned to the U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.

Cathell, the son of Sally Paugh and stepson of Keith Paugh of Wellsville, has been in the military for 19 years.

ADVANCED TRAINING

Marine Corps Pfc. Neal G. Monroe, son of Happy R. Monroe and Neal G. Monroe IV, both of Youngstown, graduated from the Marine Aviation Supply Specialist Course with Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron One, Marine Aviation Support Training Support Group 21, Meridian, Miss.

BASIC TRAINING GRADS

Air Force: Air National Guard Airman 1st Class D’Shayln C. O’Neil (Horizon Science Academy, Columbus, ’09), daughter of Crystal O’Neil of Columbus and the granddaughter of Carolyn O’Neil of Youngstown.

Navy: Seaman Taylor J. Fedrizzi, son of Trevor J. Fedrizzi, of New Castle, Pa.
