Suspended Pittsburgh cop released on house arrest

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A suspended Pittsburgh police officer accused of offering legal assistance in return for sexual favors is free on house arrest after two mental-health evaluations found him competent to stand trial.

Officer Adam Skweres was released Monday despite prosecutors’ concerns over the safety of his alleged victims.

Authorities say Skweres offered three women assistance in return for sex since 2008 and attempted to rape a fourth woman earlier this month.

Defense attorney Phil DiLucente says his client will plead not guilty at an upcoming preliminary hearing.

Skweres was suspended after being charged Feb. 16. He faces charges including bribery, indecent assault and attempted rape.

Prosecutors wanted Skweres kept behind bars, saying he had threatened his accusers if they ever came forward.
