Police: Man shot wife with flare gun

SUTERSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania man is jailed unable to post bail on charges that he twice fired a flare gun at his wife of 18 years, striking her in the torso with the second shot.

State police in Greensburg filed the charges Wednesday against 52-year-old Michael Carney, of Sutersville.

Police say the couple was arguing about 12:45 p.m. that day when Carney fired a flare at the face of his 41-year-old wife, Ruth, and missed. Police say Carney then reloaded the single-shot flare pistol and shot her in the upper abdomen before also punching her in the face.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Carney, who remained in the Westmoreland County Jail on Thursday.

Police say Ruth Carney was treated for “serious but not life-threatening injuries” at a hospital.
