Softball sign-ups set for Austintown league
Austintown girls softball league (slow-pitch) sign-ups, which are open to all Mahoning Valley girls, will be at the Austintown Township hall Jan. 5-6 from noon until 4 p.m. There will also be a free skills clinic at Austintown Middle School from 3-5 p.m. on Jan. 19. Additional sign-ups will be Feb. 2, 3, 16, and 17 from noon until 4 p.m.
Varsity girls win televised game
In a game televised live on MyYTV, the Poland varsity girls basketball team remained undefeated after beating Neshannock 48-44 in the opener of last Saturday’s four-game United Way Holiday Basketball Classic at the fieldhouse.
After shooting just 8-for-35 in the first half, the Bulldogs opened the second half with a 10-2 run to seize a 36-30 lead. After Neshannock rallied in the fourth quarter, Poland senior guard Rachael Robertson and Liz Suess each made a free throw in the final seconds to seal the Bulldogs’ win.
Kasie Serich (13 points, six steals) and Rachael Robertson (12 points, six rebounds) led Poland. Sophomore Aleah Hughes contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds. Suess tallied eight points and 10 rebounds.
PMS seventh-grade girls continue winning
The Poland Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball squad knocked off rival Canfield 36-27 on Dec. 10. The Bulldogs were led by Alexis Hughes, who scored 10 points to go along with five rebounds. Bella Gajdos chipped in seven points, eight assists and two steals.
The squad beat Niles 27-13 on Dec. 12. Bella Gajdos scored six points, grabbed eight rebounds and gathered six steals to pace the Dogs. Laiken Mauer, Alea Nicholudis and Juliana Blangero each chipped in four points, as Poland improved to 5-0 on the season.
Poland girls basketball routs Niles
The Poland girls basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 43-18 victory over Niles Dec. 13.
Aleah Hughes scored 13 points and pulled down 10 of Poland’s 42 rebounds. Rachael Robertson scored seven points for the Bulldogs.
Seventh-grade girls improve to 7-0
The Poland seventh-grade girls basketball team defeated Struthers 37-21 on Dec. 17. Poland was led by Alexis Hughes, who netted 11 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Bella Gajdos scored 11 and Juliana Blangero added nine points, five rebounds and three steals for the Bulldogs.
On Dec. 19, the quad improved to 7-0 on the season with a 32-15 defeat of Austintown Blue. Maggie Sebest led the Lady Dogs with 12 points and seven rebounds. Hughes added 10 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Gajdos had six points and six assists.
Varsity girls fall to Fitch by 20
The Poland varsity girls basketball team fell behind 27-10 at halftime and couldn’t recocer, falling 52-32 to Fitch on Dec. 20. The Bulldogs were led by Aleah Hughes with 13 points.
Basketball club hosts alumni game Jan. 2
The Poland Boys Basketball Club will host the first Poland Basketball Alumni Classic at the Poland Middle School Gym on College Street on Jan. 2. Doors open at 6:15 and tip off is at 7 p.m. The night will feature fan giveaways, a special recognition and a Ladies and Men’s game featuring, all Poland alumni players.
