Two Boardman schools came together Dec. 14 to give Market Street Elementary students a holiday show they would never forget – a visit from the high school chorale students.
The chorale sang and danced to many holiday favorites, including “Santa Baby,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” and “Silent Night,” as well as a few show tunes, like “Always Look on the Bright Side” from the hit Broadway musical “Spamalot.”
The experience was endearing to many of the BHS students, having spent their elementary years at Market Street themselves.
“It’s a smaller place than I remember,” said former Market Street student Marissa Taylor. “But really, it’s like coming home. You still see some of the teachers that you had when you went here and you see the smiles on their faces and they remember you. It means a lot, especially, for those of us that have siblings that go here right now. It makes it that much more real.”
The chorale put a lot of time and practice in before they felt comfortable going to the different schools to perform.
“Each class is one hour long, five days a week and then we practice outside of school, too,” said Taylor. “We have dress rehearsals and we all just try to get as much practice in as we can.”
Market Street Elementary School was not the only school to see a performance from the high school’s singing and dancing students.
“We will have gone to four different schools and one nursing home this year for our performances,” said chorale director Linda Smreck. “We have a total of five groups that do this and we can’t take everyone every time, but these kids work so hard. Everyone does a great job.”
