Dick’s Sporting Goods suspends gun sales

PITTSBURGH

Retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods has suspended gun sales at all its stores following last week’s killing at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” according to a statement from Dick’s Sporting Goods. “Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

“We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.”

The company did not provide any indication of how long gun sales will be suspended.

Since the shooting and killing of 28 people in Newtown, including 20 children, there have been calls for stricter gun control measures.

Just days after the shooting Gander Mountain ran an advertisement for a semi-automatic rifle with a 30-round magazine that was similar to the one used by Adam Lanza.
