East High to play in Holiday Tournament

FARRELL, PA

East High will represent Ohio in two weeks in the Dresch-McCluskey Basketball Tournament scheduled Dec. 28-29 at the E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium in Farrell, Pa.

The Panthers are off to a 4-1 start under first-year coach Dennis Simmons.

East will play Sharon in the tournament opener Dec. 28 at 6 p.m.

Farrell and West Middlesex meet in the nightcap.

The consolation game will start at 6 on Dec. 29 with the championship game to follow.

A year ago East edged West Middlesex, 68-66, in the consolation game while Sharon won a 70-65 decision over Farrell in the championship.

In the opening round in 2011 East dropped an 87-71 decision to Sharon and Farrell defeated West Middlesex, 47-40.

Wambach scores twice, US women beat China

BOCA RATON, Fla.

Abby Wambach capped the year with another scoring burst.

Wambach scored twice to lead the United States to a 4-1 exhibition victory over China before a crowd of 10,493 at FAU Stadium.

The 32-year-old Wambach has 152 international goals, six behind Mia Hamm for the U.S. record.

Megan Rapinoe and Sydney Leroux also scored for the Olympic champion Americans in their third consecutive match against China in the finale of a 10-game Fan Tribute tour.

The U.S. finished 8-0-2 in the post-Olympic exhibition games and ran its unbeaten streak to 23.

The United States struck quickly against China on Wambach’s goal in the 18th minute.

Texas sweeps Oregon for volleyball title

LOUISVILLE, Ky.

Bailey Webster had 14 kills, Haley Eckerman added 12 and third-seeded Texas swept Oregon late Saturday for its first NCAA volleyball championship since 1988.

The Longhorns won 25-11, 26-24, 25-19.

Texas (29-4) has been a recent regular at volleyball’s Final Four, making its fourth appearance in five years and playing in its first title game since 2009, when the Longhorns lost to Penn State in five sets after leading 2-0.

This time they took care of business for their second title in four tries, recording their third sweep in the past four matches.

The Longhorns ended up making quick work of the Ducks by dominating the net, outblocking Oregon 15-1. Texas also outhit the Ducks .438-.202.

Ohio State, Iowa win at Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK

Iowa and Ohio State each won a pair of duals as 14 teams competed in what organizers said was the first collegiate wrestling competition in the history of Madison Square Garden.

Iowa won 18 of 20 matches while defeating Hofstra 42-0 and topping Bucknell 34-9 in the inaugural Grapple at the Garden on Sunday.

Ohio State routed Hofstra 38-3 and Maryland 34-3.

The Hawkeyes host the Buckeyes on Jan. 4 in a matchup of two of the nation’s best teams.

Nonito Donaire stops Jorge Arce in 3rd

HOUSTON

Nonito Donaire stopped Jorge Arce with left late in the third round Saturday night to retain the WBO super-bantamweight championship at Toyota Center.

Donaire, from the Philippines, improved to 31-1 with his 20th knockout. Arce, from Mexico, dropped to 61-7-2.

The fight headlined HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” season finale, and the broadcast marked Larry Merchant’s last after 35 years as a ringside boxing commentator for the network.
