After reading an article urging a mother, who could not afford diapers, to feed her child less, a distraught Jennifer Beach decided she wanted to help local mothers facing similar financial difficulties.

As a Mary Kay Independent Consultant, Beach utilized her resources and hosted a “Diaper Drive” at the Mary Kay studio in Poland Aug. 24.

“According to the National Diaper Bank Network, the closest diaper bank is 195 miles away. When I found that out, the first thing I did was e-mail my pastor and Making Kids Count because I knew I had to do something. We are just collecting diapers — just like a food drive. All the diapers are collected are donated to “Making Kids Count,” which is a non-profit organization in Boardman. People are coming here and dropping off diapers and signing up for makeovers as a thank-you,” Beach said.

The event garnered an enormous amount of community support, and Beach’s initative collected a total of 2,300 wipes and 9,096 diapers. As a result, Beach has decided to continue her charitable efforts through her business.

“It’s awesome and it’s surprising the turnout. I have gotten e-mails from people in Iowa and people who are sending checks and I can’t believe how generous people are. It was very stressful trying to figure things out, but it’s all worth it and since I am with Mary Kay, every time someone drops off any diapers they will get 10 percent off,” Beach said.
