Author will speak about parish schools

BOARDMAN

The St. Charles Borromeo Parish Library Committee will sponsor a talk by a local educational historian at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at the ministries building, 7345 Westview Drive.

Thomas G. Welsh, author of “Closing Chapters: Urban Change, Religious Reform, and the Decline of Youngstown’s Catholic Elementary Schools,” will discuss events that led to the virtual disappearance of the city’s parish schools between 1960 and 2006.

Published by Lexington Books in December 2011, “Closing Chapters” equates local developments with national trends, pointing out that Youngstown’s situation is not unique.

Using scores of interviews with local religious and educational leaders as a resource, Welsh highlights the positive legacy of local urban parish schools.

Copies of the book will be available for autographing. For information on the talk, call the church office at 330-758-2325.

Book lets kids track Santa in their state

In a new book, “Santa is Coming to Ohio!” children can trace Santa’s route as he makes his way from the North Pole to Ohio and their house.

The book provides a good way to introduce kids to important local sites and landmarks as St. Nick flies over, around and sometimes lands on important sites such as parks, monuments, capitals, museums and other attractions on his way to their house.

Santa, with the help of Rudolph, will fly over La Veque Tower, Columbus; the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland; Cedar Point, Sandusky; and many other locations. Youngstown also is referenced in the story.

This new series is for kids everywhere. For information about “Santa is Coming to Ohio!” which will be released in October at $9.99 as a picture book, or the series as a whole, contact www.sourcebooks.com/santa.
