1616: English poet and dramatist William Shakespeare, 52, dies on what has been traditionally regarded as the anniversary of his birth in 1564.

1791: The 15th president of the United States, James Buchanan, is born in Franklin County, Pa.

1954: Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hits the first of his record 755 major-league home runs in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. (The Braves win, 7-5.)

1969: Sirhan Sirhan is sentenced to death for assassinating New York Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. (The sentence is later reduced to life imprisonment.)

1987: Twenty-eight construction workers are killed when an apartment complex being built in Bridgeport, Conn., suddenly collapses.

1987: A helicopter crashes on the lawn at a home at 5752 Stewart-Sharon Road in Brookfield after it struck a metal light pole while taking off. The pilot, Mitchell Mignano, is uninjured.

Cleveland Mayor George V. Voinovich tells the Warren Chamber of Commerce that cities can thrive if government and business cooperate.

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., D-17th, says that after meeting with representatives of Victor Posner he believes the chances are good that Sharon Steel Corp. will survive.

1972: Warren Mayor Arthur Richards says recent flood damage in his city will exceed $1 million.

State Sen. Harry Meshel, a Democrat, and Rep. Walter H. Paulo of Canfield, a Republican, give their differing views of the battle to enact Ohio’s income tax during a noon meeting of the Downtown Kiwanis Club at the YMCA.

Lou Zitello, a senior from Chaney, blasts a home run and a triple and drives in six runs to take over Youngstown State’s career RBI leadership, as the Penguins beat Steubenville College twice, 8-6 and 17-8, at Oakland Field.

1962 : About 200 people attend ground-breaking ceremonies for the most significant project in Youngstown in years, the $5.5 million sewage treatment plant on Poland Avenue.

Youngstown area motorists are saving about a dollar per fill-up as a gas war continues in the city. Regular gasoline is selling for $2.59 at most stations, but as much as 2 cents cheaper at some.

Frances McGovern of Akron is the chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, the only woman to hold such a position in the U.S. Only Massachusetts and Alabama have women on their utilities boards.

A Mahoning County grand jury indicts Associates Investment Co. and National Electric Co. on two counts of unlawful repossession. One case involved the repossession of a washing machine from Mrs. Charles Marshal, mother of 13, who had paid all but $3 toward the price of a $59 washing machine.
