Pledge drive to begin Tuesday at WYSU

YOUNGSTOWN

WYSU 88.5 FM at Youngstown State University hass its annual spring pledge drive Tuesday through Friday with a goal of $115,000 — the most ever for a WYSU spring membership drive.

For the third drive in a row, the on-air portion of the membership drive will be 72 hours long.

Everyone who pledges to WYSU (either as a new member, a renewing member or with an additional gift) between now and the end of the spring pledge drive will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of tickets on a Go Ahead Tours 11-day tour of Vienna, Budapest and Prague.

Throughout the drive, the station also will be offering a daily prize package.

Contributions to the station can be made by phone at 330-941-1481, or at www.wysu.org.

For more information, contact Ed Goist at 330-941-3364, or development@wysu.org.

Dog adopt-a-thon planned Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN

A spring dog adopt-a-thon will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mahoning County Dog Pound and Adoption Center, 589 Industrial Road.

The event is an attempt to find homes for adoptable dogs, rather than euthanizing them, said Dog Warden Matt Ditchey, who personally will pay for the spaying or neutering of the first adopted dog.

Because of recent pleasant spring weather, more dogs have been found loose and brought to the pound, Ditchey said.

Nonprofit animal-welfare organizations such as Friends of Fido, Canine Crusaders and Angels for Animals are assisting with the event, in which adopted dogs will receive a treat bag to accompany them to their new home.

Valley moves to Top 5 in hunger-aid drive

YOUNGSTOWN

After a flurry of weekend voting, the Youngstown-Warren metro area has moved into the Top 5 cities in a nationwide competition to win $1 million in food-assistance aid.

More than 2,500 votes were cast over the weekend to give the Mahoning Valley nearly 6,000 votes Sunday night and move it into fifth place, overtaking the Charlotte, N.C., area, which had a 2,000-vote lead over the Valley on Friday.

The campaign, called Fighting Hunger Together, is sponsored by Wal-Mart. Those wishing to vote for the area have until next Monday, and one vote per person is allowed per day. To vote, visit the Wal-Mart corporate Facebook page and click the logo, Fighting Hunger Together. The winning city will receive $1 million in aid; the 20 runner-up cities will receive $50,000 each.

No weapon was displayed, and no injuries were reported in the 5:03 a.m. incident, which is being investigated by city police. A text message was sent on the university’s alert system at 6:24 a.m. to students, faculty and staff concerning the attempted robbery.
