National Honor Society bestows honor to high school students who are proven to possess excellent character, scholarship, leadership, and service. On April 5, 51 Fitch High School juniors and seniors were welcomed into the ranks of the society during the induction ceremony.

The event offered students the chance to celebrate their accomplishments and to share the journey with their family and loved ones.

Zach Warmouth, president of the Fitch chapter of NHS, spoke of the organization’s ideals during an introductory speech.

“As members of National Honor Society, we have excelled in many ways and have proven ourselves apart from others by serving our community, school, fellow students and ourselves. Although I think that the tenets of character, scholarship, leadershi, and service are distinct in their own right, they are also dependent on one another. We must continue to honor all of these qualities throughout our lives,” said Warmouth.

Members of NHS chose Fitch teacher Judy Hopper to share a speech at the event. Hopper offered the juniors and seniors a collection of friendly encouragements and advice.

She began by telling the students to establish their vision.

“Decide who you want to be and follow that vision with every choice that you make. It is not an easy path, but it is a rewarding one,” she advised.

Hopper also urged the students to master their emotions, be kind and to take time to “enjoy the puppies and rainbows.”

“When I say ‘puppies and rainbows,’ they simply represent those temporary, joyous moments that keep our hearts happy. As you move through life, take time to enjoy how beautiful the world really is,” she explained.

The induction ceremony followed. Senior NHS members accompanied inductees into the Fitch auditorium, as the accomplishments of the new members were shared with the crowd.

Four candles were lit to represent character, scholarship, leadership and service. The flames were passed to each new inductee who each held their own candle.

As they were officially welcomed to NHS, the students were urged to bring their light to others through the doctrines of the organization.
