Class to get update

MINERAL RIDGE

The high-school curriculum for the former Home Economics class will get an update to a Consumer Science class for the 2012-13 school year. The Weathersfield board of education approved the change Wednesday, and schools superintendent Damon Dohar explained that the class will be modeled after one currently in use at the Trumbull County Career and Technical Center, which also is adjusting its curriculum guide for the class. The new curriculum will teach students to “manage your household from A to Z,” Dohar said. The class will modernize its methods in cooking, managing the health of family members, being physically ready and teaching different types and styles of cooking.

Volunteer needed

EAST LEWISTON

The Beaver Township Park Board is preparing for its 2012 education program at the nature preserve and is looking for a volunteer naturalist to help. “Basically, we would like to see someone who has a knowledge of the vegetation and wildlife at the nature preserve and the ability to answer questions and work with people to better their understanding of what all the nature preserve has to offer,” said Scott Conway, parks administrator. Volunteers have been transforming the 80-acre nature preserve into an outdoor classroom, built benches and planted trees, among other activities, Conway said. For information about volunteer opportunities or activities, call the park board at 330-549-9552.
