Cleveland group to repair vandalized giant guitars

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) — A community organization plans to repair damage to a pair of oversized guitars that were turned into public artwork for a fundraiser and displayed in a Cleveland park.

The Plain Dealer reports one of the 10-foot-tall Fender Stratocasters was twisted, leaving it with loose strings and scratches on the surface, which was decorated with the image of a peacock. The strings and other pieces were ripped from a second guitar painted with faces of people of different races.

A spokeswoman says United Way donated the guitars to the city in 2004 and plans to repair them as soon as possible. They were created a decade ago in an event that raised more than $2 million for the community organization.
