PSU says policies overseeing minors strengthened

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State says it has strengthened policies overseeing the supervision and treatment of minors taking part in university programs or being housed on campus.

The university said the changes announced today were part of a comprehensive review in the wake of the child sexual abuse charges against retired assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. He says he is innocent of dozens of criminal counts involving 10 boys, including allegations of abuse on school property.

Among the changes are required background checks for anyone dealing with minors, whether that person is paid or a volunteer, regardless of affiliation with Penn State.

Bullying was prohibited under the revised policy, which also discussed privacy issues including the limitations of cameras and digital equipment in private areas.

The policies are in effect immediately.
