Board of Education Vice President Gloria Lang resigned in an email to board members effective Friday, citing personal reasons, board members said after Monday’s meeting.

Board President Diana DeVito said the email was “very cordial.”

Lang was in her sixth year on the board, and board members said Monday during and after the meeting that she will be missed.

“She brought what each of us brings and that’s their own life experience, perspective and priorities,” Board member Jeff Grinstein said after Monday’s board meeting. “And diversity is what makes a board, a board.”

DeVito said Lang is very involved in the Liberty community and the school district from the parent-teacher organization to individual student groups.

“She was very hands- on,” she said. “She knew the kids individually, and they knew her. We are very sorry to see that see chose to leave.”

In 2010, the Northeast Region of the Ohio School Board Association honored Lang with the Outstanding School Board Member Award.

“I’ll go along with anything that adds credibility and could help the district,” The Vindicator quoted Lang as saying at the time. “If it opens a door in Columbus or the Legislature, I’m for it.”

Lang did not return calls from The Vindicator seeking comment on her resignation.

In her last meeting on Sept. 5, Lang was the lone dissenting vote when the board voted to settle financially with Liberty Exemplary Academic Design and Liberty Early Academic Resource Nest for $350,000. LEAD and LEARN paid $250,000 the next day in exchange for the district’s lifting the academic suspension it had on the two community schools. The other $100,000 will be paid within a year from the date the settlement was approved.

After that meeting, Lang would not say why she voted no on the settlement.

In her resignation, Lang said she planned to attend Monday’s meeting, but in a subsequent email to board members, said she would not.

The board accepted her resignation at a special meeting Sept. 13.
