North Dakota State 37, Minnesota 24

MINNEAPOLIS

Marcus Williams had two defensive touchdowns for North Dakota State on Saturday to help the Bison pull off another FCS team upset of Minnesota. Williams, a sophomore cornerback who played at Hopkins High School in the Twin Cities — one of the dozens of Minnesotans on NDSU’s roster — returned an interception of Max Shortell’s late heave 40 yards for a touchdown to seal the game.

Northern Iowa 38, Western Illinois 10

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa

Quarterback Tirrell Rennie accounted for five touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards for the third straight game in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams. Rennie had touchdown runs of 2, 12 and 35 yards while rushing for 106 yards on 12 carries. He also completed 10 of 14 passes for 142 yards, including TD throws of 30 yards to David Johnson and 4 to Darion Howard. Johnson added 132 yards rushing on 21 carries for the Panthers (2-1). Western Illinois (1-3) got its only touchdown on a 1-yard run by Caulton Ray with 2:49 left in the game. Ray had 79 yards rushing. Josh Hudson was 7 for 12 passing for 97 yards before leaving with an injury that Leathernecks coach Mark Hendrickson said afterward was not serious. Wil Lunt finished up, completing 11 of 20 passes for 110 yards.

Southern Illinois 20, Missouri State 18

CARBONDALE, Ill.

Jackson MacLachlan hit a 27-yard field goal with 50 seconds remaining in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams. The Salukis (2-1) got the ball on their own 28 with 4:51 left and drove 62 yards in 11 plays to set up MacLachlan’s game-winner. Missouri State (0-4) had taken an 18-17 lead on a 1-yard run by Chris Douglas with 6 seconds left in the third quarter, before failing on the two-point conversion.

Illinois State 20, South Dakota State 13

NORMAL, Ill.

Ashton Leggett rushed for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Leggett’s scoring runs of 4 and 1 yards put the Redbirds (2-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley) up 13-0, as the extra point after the first TD was blocked.
