Phantoms open Fall Classic with win

SIOUX CITY, IOWA

The Youngstown Phantoms scored four goals in the third period to rally for a 5-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in the first game of the USHL Fall Classic at the Tyson Events Center on Thursday.

The Phantoms trailed 3-1 entering the final period, but J.T. Stenglein’s unassisted goal with just 27 seconds remaining completed the comeback and give the Phantoms their third win in four preseason games.

Stenglein also had an assist in the game, a tally by Pat Conte with 15:52 remaining in the third period, which tied the score at 3.

Michael Gunn got Youngstown on the board with 13:03 remaining in the second period on a powerplay goal, set up by Chris Bradley.

The Roughriders added a pair of scores four minutes apart, the last coming by Stu Wilson with 59 seconds remaining in the period, to give Cedar Rapids the two-goal advantage at the intermission.

Youngstown, though, came out firing in the final period, closing to 3-2 on an unassisted powerplay goal by Dylan Margonari with 16:16 remaining.

Conte’s goal tied the score, but Nick Saracino gave Cedar Rapids the lead againt just 46 seconds later.

Richard Zehnal’s powerplay goal (assisted by Sam Anas) tied the score againt with 8:37 remaining in the third period, setting up Stenglein’s winner.

Austin Ortega and Ryan McGrath also scored for the Roughriders, while Nolan Zajac had a pair of assists.

Youngstown goalie Mattew O’Connor played the entire game and finished with 24 saves.

The Phantoms went 3 for 7 with a man advantage.
