City council authorized Monday the funds to remove the sediment along Mud Run Creek that has collected for 10 years and contributed to the city’s flooding in early spring.

The contract with C. Crump Inc., 2420 Masury Road, will cost the city $67,800.

Lanier Epperson, the city’s service director, said the last time the city cleaned the creek, which runs mostly north and south through downtown, was in 2000. He said that since then, sandbars and debris built up and caused flooding in the backyards of homes, businesses and churches.

Epperson sought a permit from the Army Corp of Engineers Pittsburgh District only three months ago.

“I was told it wouldn’t happen,” he said, but he gave the Army Corps of Engineers credit for working closely with the city and obtaining the permit needed to go ahead with the project in a shorter time frame than expected.

“I was really amazed by the [corps’] cooperation,” Epperson said.

He expects the creek to be cleared within 30 days.

The Mud Run Creek cleanup is only one part of the city’s attempt to prevent the flooding throughout Hubbard. As of Sept. 10, 506 catch basins throughout the city were cleaned and 31 were repaired.
