Illinois teen charged in parents’ beating deaths

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) — A judge has ordered a 17-year-old high school student held without bond on charges of killing his parents in their suburban Chicago home.

Authorities charged John Granat with first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, who were found beaten early Sunday in their Palos Park home.

The teen told authorities that he came home at 8 p.m. Saturday and went to bed in the basement around midnight. He says he found his parents’ bodies in the morning and called 911.

The Cook County medical examiner ruled Monday that 42-year-old Maria Granat and 44-year-old John Granat died after suffering multiple blunt force injuries.

Maria Granat also was stabbed and her skull was fractured. Her husband had a fractured jaw and lacerated liver.

Police haven’t revealed a motive for the killings.
