Neighbors | Emily Gianetti. The Boardman Spartan Marching Band performed its Lion King show as part of Canfield's Show of Bands on Aug. 30.

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band and the Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents, Inc. will host Boardman Band Night 2011 tonight at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium. Participating high school bands include Springfield, Lowellville, West Branch, East Palestine and Boardman.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free to all Boardman Band events. Gates open at 6 p.m.

This year’s Band Night Show will live up to the tradition of quality entertainment. Boardman continues its traditional Run-On and “Fanfare for the Common Man.” The opening marching drill is to a medley of tunes by The Beatles.

The Spartan Twirlers are the first featured group. They will perform a fire-baton routine to a K.C. and the Sunshine Band medley.

The Spartan Silks come to the front to spin their flags to Michael Buble’s version of “Sway,” which also features vocalist Zach Stover. The Spartan Sweethearts will perform a routine to the Irving Berlin classic “Puttin’ On The Ritz.”

This year’s closer is already creating a buzz in the community. It’s a tribute to Disney and Broadway’s THE LION KING.

At 259 members, this year’s Spartan Marching Band is the largest high school band in the area. The band is under the direction of Thomas M. Ruggieri, Timothy P. Tuite, Steven Chambers and Michael Shevock. Also on staff are Jamie Cordon, Niki Dispenza, and Janet Gbur, who instruct the Sweethearts, Silks and Twirlers.

The band performs at all Boardman High School varsity football games, local band nights and various community events. The performance schedule for 2011-2012 includes a Cleveland Indians game, a Cleveland Browns football game and two other local band nights.

The big trip for this school year will take place at the end of December as the Band and Jazz Ensemble I travel to Orlando for performances at Walt Disney World.
