Roars, hisses, and squawks could be heard throughout the Boardman library on Oct. 11 as the guests to the “Fun for 4s and 5s” story time explored the world of jungle animals.
Boardman librarian and host Ashley Bentfeld used the jungle theme as a way to teach the little readers about the importance of sound in literacy.
“Making all kinds of tiny sounds will help the kids sound out new words that they discover. In fancier terms, we call this phonological awareness, which is a great tool for beginning readers,” shared Bentfeld.
First, Bentfeld had her guests explore their theme by asking them what kind of animals live in the jungle, and she received answers of lions, zebras, elephants, and monkeys. Bentfeld featured multiple discovery books, making sure her guests were answering questions, guessing answers, and getting involved by noticing the secrets in pop-up books. The guests had a bit of fun by doing the “Jungle boogie,” where they discovered animal sounds and did a little dance.
The event ended with a craft of a slithering snake. After decorating a long strip of paper, the kids connected a piece of yarn to turn their craft into their very own pet snakes.
“I wouldn’t suggest it in real life, but at least our craft is the kind of snake that you can take on a walk with you,” joked Bentfeld.
