Austintown

Police charged a township man with felonious assault on a police officer nearly two hours after authorities said he committed a theft at a food mart.

Marc Schadel, 25, of Paisley Street, was charged with robbery, felonious assault, resisting arrest, fleeing, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a drug-abuse instrument and drug abuse heroin for his involvement in two separate incidents Wednesday night.

According to police reports, Schadel entered Golden Food Mart on New Road at about 11:15 p.m. and told the clerk, “I’m going to jail tomorrow. Do you have any money?”

When the clerk said he didn’t, Schadel walked away, then came back to the counter where he began to hit the cash register.

He was able to open the drawer to take an undetermined amount of money. On his way out, a male customer attempted to stop him, resulting in a brief altercation before Schadel fled in his car down New Road, police said.

Police began to search for Schadel’s red vehicle, and attempted a traffic stop just before midnight at Wedgewood Drive and South Raccoon Road.

According to reports, Schadel didn’t stop and fled northbound on South Raccoon to his residence at an apartment complex on Paisley.

Officers entered his apartment, found him in the bathroom and tried to take him into custody. He was uncooperative and after kicking and wrestling to get free, tried to stick an officer with a syringe, according to the report.

After several unsuccessful attempts at using a stun gun on Schadel, he was able to fight his way out of the bathroom. Officers eventually were able to handcuff him after using pepper spray and a final shot from the stun gun, according to police.

He was booked into Mahoning County jail. He will be arraigned at a later date in Mahoning County Area Court here.
