Warren G. Harding High School’s Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Bowling Green State University this month to attend the BGSU Academic Challenge Tournament and came home with a first-place trophy.

The team, consisting of Michael Coates, Sam Eartly, Korey Gall and Joseph Angelo, and coached by Harding teacher Kim Hunter, went undefeated through eight rounds of play.

Opponents of WGH included teams from Detroit Central Catholic, Olmsted Falls, Divine Child, Ottawa Hills, Beachwood and several other Toledo-area schools.

The competition emphasizes critical thinking and requires students to answer pyramidal-type questions in history, literature, fine arts, science, mathematics, philosophy, religion and other areas.

Harding was among the top four teams going into the playoffs, beating the team from Detroit Central Catholic to advance to the final round, where it then defeated the team from Olmsted Falls to win the first-place trophy.

The team recently traveled to a tournament at South Range High School, where they came in second place overall, and to the Fall Kickoff Tournament at Olmsted Falls High School on the west side of Cleveland, where they placed third overall in the tournament.

The team will be traveling in December to Northmont High School near Dayton to attend the Rowdy Raider Invitational tournament, where it will be competing against some of the best teams from around the nation.
