Brown hits 1,000 for career in YSU victory

Brandi Brown had a game-high 19 points and a team-best 14 rebounds to lead Youngstown State’s women’s basketball team to a 64-50 victory over Loyola Marymount on Friday.
Brown, a junior who grew up about an hour from Los Angeles, reached 1,000 points for her YSU career with her first free throw of the game. It gave the Penguins (3-2) a 7-6 lead and they never trailed again.
Heidi Schlegel also had a double-double for Youngstown State with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and she had a team-best five assists.
Kenya Middlebrooks made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Penguins, who play in the championship of the Westside Thanksgiving Classic today against Northern Iowa. Tipoff will be at approximately 6:15 p.m.
Alex Cowling led Loyola Marymount (0-5) with 18 points, 17 rebounds and three rebounds.
The Lions shot just 32 percent from the field (20 of 63) were 0 of 8 on 3-pointers.
YSU led by double digits for most of the second half, but Loyola Marymount cut the deficit to 43-36 with 12:23 left. Brown’s layup on a pass from fellow Los Angeles native Macey Nortey put YSU up by nine, starting a 7-0 run.
YSU’s biggest lead came on Brown’s final bucket of the game. Her layup at the 3:44 mark on a pass from Schlegel capped another seven-point run that put the Penguins ahead 62-44.
YSU shot 40 percent (21 of 52) for the game and scored 20 points off Loyola Marymount’s 18 turnovers.
