The fourth-graders at Union Elementary worked together to enjoy a day-long celebration of fall on Oct. 13.

The “Celebration of Fall” activity day had the fourth-grade students traveling between 10 different stations to enjoy autumn-themed activities.

“Today, we’re putting together a lot of the skills that the students have learned in their fourth-grade classrooms,” explained teacher Michelle Landers. “The students are completing cooperative group work while also integrating lessons in art, math, reading and writing.”

In the fourth-grade classrooms of Landers and fellow teachers Alicia Williams and Marilyn Johnstone, the students decorated turkey crafts and created a manual to care for a pet monster. To explore math, the students estimated, measured and compared themselves to “Helga the Horrible,” a cut-out of a witch, and measured various gourds.

Students were also free to bring in their own pumpkins for the comparing pumpkins station. There, the students measured circumference and guessed and measured the weights of each pumpkin.

Fourth-grader Bobby Ramsey brought a large pumpkin but insisted that it wasn’t going to be for carving.

“My family and I will be making a really good pie out of this pumpkin,” he explained.

“It’s a fun day for everyone to explore all the fun of fall and use their skills at the same time,” added Landers.
