1961: House Speaker Samuel T. Rayburn, 79, dies at his home in Bonham, Texas, having served as speaker since 1940 except for two terms as minority leader of the Democrats.

1966: Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard is acquitted in his second trial of murdering his pregnant wife, Marilyn, in 1954.

1973: Skylab 4, carrying a crew of three astronauts, is launched from Cape Canaveral on an 84-day mission.

1936: Three thousand Italians authorize a telegram to Gov. Martin L. Davey urging the appointment of Atty. William B. Spagnola to serve the remainder of Municipal Judge Peter B. Beckenbach’s term. Beckenbach was elected domestic relations judge.

Chester Hayhurst, 10, is in South Side Hospital in traction for treatment of a broken leg, but the biggest concern is that he won’t be able to organize the traditional neighborhood effort by him and his pals to repair discarded toys between Thanksgiving and Christmas for distribution to needy children.
