Ohio dad charged in diaper wipe lodged in infant's throat

Monday, November 14, 2011

CLEVELAND (AP) — Authorities say an Ohio father was charged with child endangering when a diaper wipe was found lodged in his infant son’s throat.

Joshua Rains, 25, of Cleveland pleaded not guilty after his arrest last week. Police say the infant needed to be placed on life-support, but there was no medical update as of noon today.

Rains was charged with felony child endangering and was released on bond after pleading not guilty. Another court hearing is scheduled Nov. 22.

The father told police he cleaned the baby’s mouth and then the wipe disappeared. He says his attempt to dislodge the wipe but only jammed it further in the infant’s throat.

Attorney Daniel Margolis said today his client maintains it was accidental. The man’s other children have been placed in county custody.
