YOUNGSTOWN

The warm and dry weather enticed more people than expected to the 10th annual South Avenue Shuffle Saturday, event organizers said.

This year, proceeds from the shuffle benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“It’s always for a cause and the cause changes each year,” said Lori Greenwalt, manager of East Side Civics.

Last year, the shuffle raised about $4,500 for the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics, and Greenwalt expects to raise about that much this year.

Greenwalt said 400 T-shirts were printed for the event, but that was not enough for the large crowd.

Attendees were given a T-shirt and other incentives at all of the participating taverns, which organize the event and include The Evergreens, VFW, East Side Civics, Teenie’s Tavern, Mike O’Malley’s Irish Bar, The Pastime, Coconut Grove, Piggy’s Club and Irish Bob’s.

People walked up and down South Avenue from noon to 6 p.m. , and Greenwalt praised Youngstown police for their efforts to keep everyone safe.

As the shuffle came to a close, an altercation occurred outside of Teenie’s Tavern. Four Youngstown police officers responded. Laura Lynn Milley, 24, of Boardman, was issued a summons for disorderly conduct while intoxicated, and Robert Louk, 31, of Struthers, was arrested for disorderly conduct while intoxicated and resisting arrest. Police said Louk screamed and charged at officers while Milley was being detained, and an officer sprayed pepper spray in Louk’s face.
