Former DC school chief, Gov. Kasich discuss reform

Thursday, March 31, 2011

COLUMBUS (AP) — The former head of the Washington, D.C., public school system says she appreciates Gov. John Kasich’s effort to reform education in Ohio.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Michelle Rhee and Kasich appeared together at a showing of the documentary “Waiting for ’Superman.’”

Rhee became a public face of education reform during her tenure as chancellor. Teacher unions and even groups of parents balked at her ideas to close schools, fire teachers, and get rid of tenure.

The film’s viewing Wednesday night came as a bill to restrict the collective-bargaining rights for teachers and other public workers cleared the Ohio Legislature. It gets rid of automatic pay increases, and replaces them with merit raises.

Kasich said legislation would soon be completed to outline measures for assessing teacher performance.
