Vegetable-growing contest for youths

CORTLAND

The Trumbull 4-H and Master Gardener programs are hosting a vegetable-growing contest for Trumbull County youths Aug. 6 at the 2011 Summer Sizzle at the Trumbull Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 W. Main St.

There will be three age divisions: 8 years old and younger, 9 to 13 and 14 to 18.

The competition will be in separate classes for tomatoes, peppers (bell and nonbell), squash/zucchini and fun — use your imagination to create a work of art using any of the vegetables from categories 1-3. Self-defense program graduation Monday

WARREN

The YWCA Warren and the city of Warren’s Weed & Seed Program will host a graduation ceremony at 4 p.m. Monday at the YWCA Warren for the women and teens who recently completed an eight-week basic self- defense program. A grant provided by the city’s Weed & Seed Program paid for 12 teens and 10 adults who live in the target area to participate in the eight-week workshop.

Used sports equipment

CANFIELD

Two Canfield High School students will have a used sports-equipment drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Sunday at St. Michael Church on state Route 46.

The equipment will be donated to underprivileged children in the Appalachian region of Grahn, Ky., where 1 in 4 residents lives below the poverty line.

Seniors Lauren Lewis and Maggie Watt will be collecting gently used or new sporting goods, including shoes, helmets, pads, gloves and balls.

Parishioners of St. Michael have been traveling to Grahn since 1999 to help the elderly, needy and disabled with work around their homes.

Good Friday breakfast

YOUNGSTOWN

The YMCA of Youngstown will sponsor its annual Good Friday breakfast and service April 22. Last year, 500 people attended.

Pastor Julius Davis of Friendship Baptist Church of Girard will offer the message. Music will be provided by Max Pivik.

Doors open at 7:15 a.m.; the program will begin at 8 in the second-floor community gym of the YMCA’s Central Branch, 17 N. Champion St.

Tables of eight may be purchased for $75; individual tickets are $10.

Reservation checks should be received no later than April 13. Checks may be mailed to YMCA, P.O Box 1287, Youngstown 44501-1287, addressed to Attention: Metro Office. Include the name of the group, if applicable.

Health council

HUBBARD

Hubbard Township Trustee Fred Hanley was elected chairman of the Trumbull County Health Advisory Council. Walt Emrick is vice chairman, and Rebecca Whitman is secretary.

The council appoints members to the county board of health and provides input concerning the health district.

Ohio Pet Expo

NILES

The Northeast Ohio Pet Expo Show & Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Sunday at the Eastwood Expo Center, 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road. Included is a pet fashion show at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Greek parade

WARREN

A Greek Independence Day Parade will be at noon next Sunday.

The parade will begin at St. Demetrios Church, 429 High St. NE, and end at Warren Ampitheatre, 321 Mahoning Ave. NW. At that time, a brief program and lunch will be offered. Children will perform poems and dances at 1:30 p.m.
