The board of education adopted two resolutions to approve contract suspensions of the 11 nonteaching and 14 licensed or certified staff affected by recent layoffs.

The board also approved retirement and unpaid parental leave for two teachers at its Wednesday night session. Any retirements or resignations announced before the start of the 2011-12 school year could continue to affect those individuals affected by layoffs.

Board members also learned the district could receive as much as $5,000 through the Race to the Top federal grant it has been participating in. When several Ohio school districts recently opted out of the program, they freed up $9.7 million which now will be reallocated to participating districts.

The board approved a summer trip for the Italian class which will travel to Italy from June 20 through June 30. All fees associated with that trip are paid by students and their parents.

The board discussed improvements that will be made to buildings and grounds this summer as part of regular maintenance. Those projects, which could include fixing potholes in parking lots after a rough winter, are paid for through permanent improvement funds and not the general fund. Permanent improvement funds must be spent on projects with a lifespan of five or more years.

The next board of education meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. April 13.
