Man indicted after reported assault

YOUNGSTOWN

A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a 25-year-old city man on two counts of felonious assault with firearm specifications, two counts of kidnapping and one count each of grand theft and improperly handling a gun in a motor vehicle.

The charges against Joseph Hornbuckle, of Elm Street, stem from a Feb. 20 altercation at a Tyrell Street apartment on the West Side and from Hornbuckle’s arrest in a traffic stop the next day at Logan Avenue and Halleck Street on the North Side.

A 22-year-old woman told police that Hornbuckle, who had been dating her since October, became enraged because another man sent her a text message, drew a 9 mm handgun and hit her on the head with it, made her leave her apartment, beat her and jabbed her in the face with a burning cigar — all while her 16-month-old daughter was asleep in her apartment.

Hornbuckle, whose driver’s license was suspended, then took her key chain and left in her car without her permission, the woman told police.

Police observed and photographed several bruises, two black eyes and a burn mark on the victim’s face.

“The circumstances are quite alarming” and justify a high bond, Basil Ally, an assistant city prosecutor, told Judge Elizabeth Kobly at Hornbuckle’s initial appearance by video in municipal court in late February. Judge Kobly set Hornbuckle’s bond at $245,000.
