New York judge jails man for bringing beer to DWI hearing
MONTICELLO, N.Y.
Authorities say a New York man appearing before a judge on a felony drunken- driving charge arrived at court an hour and a half late, drunk and carrying an open can of Busch beer.
Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty says Keith Gruber of Swan Lake had four unopened beer cans in his bag Monday when he tried to walk through the metal detector at the county courthouse.
The Middletown Times Herald-Record reports that Judge Frank LaBuda asked the 49-year-old Gruber if he enjoyed his “liquid lunch.” Gruber said he did then said he was sorry. The judge revoked his bail and sent him to jail.
Gruber was arrested Dec. 27 in the town of Liberty and was out on $30,000 cash bail. He has prior DWI convictions.
The judge dismissed Gruber’s court-appointed lawyer Monday because Gruber refused to cooperate with him. A phone number listed for Gruber was disconnected.
Coyote delays jets at busy Atlanta airport
ATLANTA
Authorities say a coyote wandered onto a runway in Atlanta, delaying flights for a few minutes at the world’s busiest airport until ground crews chased the animal away.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the flights were delayed briefly Tuesday afternoon at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the coyote was spotted on the south side of the airport around 3:30 p.m.
She said an airport vehicle chased the animal into a ravine, and flights resumed after about five minutes.
The airport is ranked the world’s busiest by the industry group Airports Council International.
Boy claimed shooting to cover up ripped pants, police say
SALT LAKE CITY
Police say a 14-year-old Utah boy was trying to cover up for falling and ripping his new pants when he reported a bullet grazed him.
South Salt Lake police Sgt. Mikael Wersland told the Salt Lake Tribune that the teen reported the shooting Tuesday evening. Police say about 10 witnesses told them they did not hear any gunfire in the area at the time.
Wersland says the boy “fell down and tore the knee” of his pants but lied about being grazed by a bullet because he didn’t want to get into trouble. The sergeant says the teen suffered only a “scrape where he fell down.”
The boy has not been identified. It was not immediately known whether he would be charged with any crime.
