Conference planned

LIBERTY

A Minority Physicians Conference, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Cancer Coalition, Humility of Mary Health Partners, Forum Health and the American Cancer Society, is from 9 a.m. to noon April 2 at the Youngstown Country Club, 1402 Country Club Drive.

Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The cost, which includes a breakfast buffet, is $20. To register by the Monday deadline, call the Cancer Society at 888-227-6446, Option 2, or send checks payable to Mahoning Valley Cancer Coalition, P.O. Box 6783, Youngstown, Ohio 44501-6783.

Open house

FARRELL, PA.

The UPMC Cancer Center at UPMC Horizon will have a community open house April 6 from 3 to 6 p.m. at UPMC Horizon’s Shenango Valley campus. Dr. Dwight E. Heron, vice chairman of radiation oncology at UPMC Shadyside, will speak about the center’s technology and capabilities. His presentation will be followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce and tours of the facilities. Refreshments will be served.

Training program

NILES

Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, 1500 McKinley Ave., is offering a free training program for people interested in becoming Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program volunteers. The training is open to the public with continuing-education units available to RNs, LPNs, and social workers.

The course dates are April 6, 13, 20, 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and June 1 from 10 a.m. to noon. To register, go to www.ohioinsurance.gov and click on Medicare Services or call Bill Friend at 614-752-0718.

To mark April as Minority Health Month, the Youngstown YWCA is offering two free events:

“Cancer 101: How it affects women,” April 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., Youngstown.

“Stand Up, Speak Out! Addressing Substance Abuse and Violence in Youth,” April 14, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St., Youngstown.

Safety training

The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is offering safety training classes at its Warren office at 661 Mahoning Ave. NW. To register, visit www.redcross.org or call 330-392-2551. The classes are:

“Adult CPR and Standard 1st Aid,” Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $55, and Trumbull County residents over 60 may be able to attend the session free.

“CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers,” April 16, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $70.

Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities Board, 4791 Woodridge Drive, invites the public to its annual Awareness Month Breakfast from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. Wednesday. The program features a presentation on the MCBDD’s transportation program.

Free health fair

The Youngstown City Health District, 345 Oak Hill Ave., is having a health fair to kick off National Public Health Week on April 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free event will have informational vendors, activities for children, community agencies offering services, and free screenings and giveaways.
