Vote due on Ohio bill to have voters show photo ID

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio House plans to vote today on a fast-moving bill that would require Ohio voters to show a photo ID before they can cast a ballot.

Supporters say the measure is aimed at keeping people from trying to vote more than once. It would require voters to present photo identification at a polling place on Election Day or when casting an absentee ballot in person.

Democrats in the House are calling it a veiled poll tax, since some low-income or homeless Ohioans do not have IDs. They also complain the measure is being rushed. It cleared a House committee Tuesday night, seven days after being introduced.

Other opponents include the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, AARP Ohio, and the Ohio AFL-CIO.
