Klein selected top pitcher by Horizon

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State senior Phil Klein has been named the Horizon League pitcher of the week for the week of March 14, the league office announced.

Klein carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and did not allow a base-runner until the fifth in leading YSU to a 7-1 victory over Toledo on Sunday.

Klein struck out a career-high 13 of the 29 batters he faced in eight innings of work. He allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk.

Over his last two starts, Klein has a 1.38 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings.

Ingalls honored

INDIANAPOLIS

For the second consecutive week, Youngstown State junior Jordan Ingalls was named Horizon League softball player of the week.

Ingalls led the Penguins to six wins in eight games by hitting .548 with four extra-base hits. Ingalls had a double, two triples and a home run.

She recorded a hit in each game and had six multi-hit games. She had three hits in three contests.

Ingalls also drove in 12 runs in eight games, including the game-winner against Colgate to cap a 6-5 victory after YSU trailed 5-0 through five innings.

Justin Thomas sent to minors

BRADENTON, FLA.

Former Youngstown State pitcher Justin Thomas has been sent to Indianapolis (Class AAA) by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Thomas, 27, appeared in five spring training games for Pittsburgh. Over 41/3 innings, he allowed six runs — just one was earned — with a 2.08 ERA. He had four strikeouts and four walks.

USHL honors trio

CHICAGO

The United States Hockey League announced the weekly award winners for the 25th week of the regular season.

Forward John Gaudreau of the Dubuque Fighting Saints was named the offensive player of the week; defenseman Jordan Schmaltz of the Sioux City Musketeers was selected as defensive player of the week; and C.J. Motte of the Waterloo Black Hawks earned honors as the goaltender of the Week.

Canfield golf scramble

Nathan Whitehead (90 pounds) went 5-2 and came in 7th place at the Grade School Wrestling tournament at the Covelli Centre.

He was inadvertantly omitted from a story on Monday.

Big 10 ADs propose men’s hockey

PARK RIDGE, Ill.

Big Ten athletic directors are proposing a men’s hockey league that would start competition in 2013-14. The proposal will be sent to the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors in June.

The Big Ten hockey league would be made up of Central Collegiate Hockey Association members Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State and Western Collegiate Hockey Association members Minnesota and Wisconsin. Penn State starts its program in 2012.

Penguin forward Cooke suspended

DETROIT

Penguins forward Matt Cooke was suspended for the remainder of the regular season and first round of the playoffs by the NHL for elbowing Ryan McDonagh of the New York Rangers in the head.

Pittsburgh has nine games to play in the regular season so the suspension will be a minimum of 14 matches. He will also lose $219,512.20 in salary.
