OHSBCA announces hall of fame class

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) has announced the next hall of fame inductees.

The four high school coaches being inducted are Jerry Doerger of Cincinnati McNicholas HS; Larry Jordan of Ross Southeastern HS; Bob Seggerson of Lima Central Catholic HS and Jim Cappelletti of Cleveland Heights HS.

The induction ceremony will take place at the Columbus Airport Marriott at 1375 North Cassady Ave. on April 16 at 5:30 p.m.

Justin Stevens commits to Mercyhurst College

YOUNGSTOWN

Defenseman Justin Stevens will play ice hockey at Mercyhurst College in the fall of 2012.

Currently he plays with the Youngstown Phantoms and will be the 15th Phantom on the current roster to secure a college commitment.

Stevens is playing in his first year with the Phantoms but he has three years of junior experience.

He is a Brantford, Ontario native.

Gary Woodland wins at Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla.

Gary Woodland made only one par on the back nine Sunday at the Transitions Championship, and it gave him his first PGA Tour victory and a trip to the Masters.

Woodland surged into the lead with three straight birdies, and fell out of it with back-to-back bogeys. Tied for the lead on the final hole at Innisbrook, the big-hitter from Kansas holed a 10-foot par putt to finish off a 4-under 67.

That proved to be the difference moments later when Webb Simpson also went long on the 18th and his chip down the slope went 20 feet by the hole. Simpson missed the putt to shoot 69.

Djokovic beats Nadal to win BNP Paribas Open

INDIAN WELLS, Calif.

Novak Djokovic beat top-ranked Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the BNP Paribas Open title on Sunday, keeping the Serbian undefeated this year.

Djokovic improved to 18-0, including victories at the Australian Open and in Dubai last month. He will move into the No. 2 spot when the ATP Tour rankings are released today.

Geneti sets marathon record of 2:06:35

SANTA MONICA, Calif.

Markos Geneti set a Los Angeles Marathon record in winning in his debut at 26.2 miles Sunday, while Buzunesh Deba won the women’s event to give Ethiopia a sweep.

Geneti opened a big lead on Nicolas Kamakya and two-time defending champion Wesley Korir during the 17th mile and prevailed in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 35 seconds, the second fastest marathon in the world this year.

Kamakya finished second in 2:09:26 and Laban Moiben of Kenya was third in 2:13:12.

Sprint lifts Farah in NYC Half-Marathon

NEW YORK

Mo Farah of England outsprinted Gebre Gebremariam in the final 200 meters of the NYC Half-Marathon on Sunday, edging the Ethiopian by 2 seconds in a scintillating finish along Manhattan’s West Side Highway.

The British runner raced past and then held off Gebremariam, the 2010 New York City Marathon champion, and American Galen Rupp to cover the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour, 23 seconds. Gebremariam placed second in 1:00:23 and Rupp third in 1:00:30.

Caroline Rotich won the women’s race in 1:08:52, pulling away from fellow Kenyan Edna Kiplagat in the last mile.

Germany takes World Cup team event

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland

World Cup champion Maria Riesch helped Germany win the season-ending team event on Sunday.

Germany defeated Italy 3-1 in the final that involved teams of two men and two women racing head-to-head on parallel giant slalom courses. Riesch defeated Denis Karbon in their heat, one day after winning her first overall World Cup title.
