Prayers for the Valley and the world dominate daily walk in Warren

Every day for the last three years, George Prvonozac has taken a walk around Courthouse Square here. The walk isn’t for his well-being, he says, but for the city.

Prvonozac, 65, uses his walks as an opportunity for prayer.

He prays for the local businesses, the local government, the Youngstown area, the nation, and lately his prayers have included hot spots Egypt and Libya.

Since retiring after 30 years with Delphi Corp. in 2001, the city resident has spent his time devoted to learning and spreading the word of God through prayer and community service.

“The power of prayer, we believe, comes out of the Bible, where two or more are gathered in his name,” he said. “We believe this is what God wants because we quote 2 Chronicles 7:14: ‘If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.’ We believe in prayer because that’s what the Lord commands us to do.”

Over the last 18 months, Prvonozac has been joined in his prayer walk by friend and fellow Pleasant Valley Evangelical Church member Dan Spithaler of Howland.

After hearing about what Prvonozac was doing – alone — Spithaler decided to join him.

“It’s been a real blessing for me,” he said. “We’ve seen some good come of it. We’ve greeted a lot of people and we ask them if there’s anything we can do for them.”
